More about our organization
Founded in 1958, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership was founded to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society through understanding and action based on effective and compassionate leadership. Actor Hugh O'Brian, who is famous for his portrayal of Wyatt Earp, was inspired by a visit to Dr. Albert Switzer the German doctor-missionary-theologian-musician.
Switzer believed that the United States was the only place with the resources to solve the global issues of poverty and peace. He challenged O'Brian to do something with his resources. And nearly 50 years and 345,000 alumni later, HOBY has become a global organization dedicated to molding high school sophomores into leaders.
Services
HOBY is a seminar-based program for high school sophomores that features a three day lesson filled with panels, community service and roundtable discussions.
Every spring, across the nation and in Canada, Mexico, Israel, China, Taiwan, Korea, Bolivia, and Argentina, one high school student from each participating high school is chosen to attend a three day leadership seminar.
These students engage in conversations with experts in media, business and technology and are challenged to think about leadership ethics and service.
HOBY is a non-profit organization, 4,000 volunteers run HOBY's programs with community leaders, business executives, educators and parents involved in every seminar.
HOBY is based on the core values of volunteerism, excellence, organizational integrity, diversity, innovative thinking, community partnership, and life long leadership opportunities.
HOBY's primary purpose is to give high school sophomores the opportunity to discover their leadership potential and how to use their potential to become the leaders of tomorrow," said O'Brian. "We give them a hands-on opportunity to interact with today's top movers and shakers in business, government, education, technology and other professions. I founded HOBY in 1958 based on his comment that 'the most important thing in education is teaching young people to think for themselves.' Our thrust is to teach them how to think, not what to think, and what the thinking process is!"
